The Dorothy P. Flint Nassau County 4-H Camp offers a variety of outdoor educational opportunities for schools, youth groups and community organizations. Groups can schedule educational programs, and rent camp facilities as well as food service, from September-June. The camp is operated by Cornell Cooperative Extension of Nassau County.

GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT OUR CAMP

The Dorothy P. Flint Nassau County 4-H Camp offers a variety of outdoor educational opportunities for schools, youth groups and community organizations. Groups can schedule educational programs and rent camp facilities. The camp is operated by Cornell Cooperative Extension of Nassau County, licensed by the Suffolk County Department of Health and accredited by the American Camping Association.

HEALTH AND SAFETY

Individual and group safety is our highest priority. The following rules are strictly enforced:

  • Members of user groups are prohibited from entering camp areas and facilities except those areas and buildings specifically designated on the Camp Use Agreement.
  • Smoking is prohibited in all buildings. Smoking is only permitted by adults in designated outside areas. Adults who smoke must dispose of matches and tobacco product remains in designated containers.
  • The possession, distribution and/or use of alcohol or controlled substances on camp property are prohibited.
  • The possession and/or use of weapons or dangerous objects, including but not limited to firearms, fireworks, pocketknives, folding knives and slingshots, is prohibited.
  • The beachfront, including the bluff, is off-limits to user groups except when specifically authorized by the Camp Manager or his designee. No swimming is permitted.
  • No person may enter the farm area or buildings without the explicit authorization of the Camp Manager.
  • Outdoor camp fires are permitted in designated areas only and only with the prior approval of the Camp Manager or his designee. No fires are permitted on the beach. User groups must provide their own wood or use wood identified by camp personnel. User groups are prohibited from cutting down branches or trees.
  • Tampering with or removing fire safety equipment, including extinguishers and smoke alarms, is prohibited.

CERTIFICATE OF INSURANCE

Each user group is required to submit a Certificate of Insurance for a minimum limit of $1,000,000 in liability coverage, naming Cornell Cooperative Extension, the Dorothy P. Flint Nassau County 4-H Camp and the County of Nassau as additionally insured for the period of time that your group is scheduled at camp. Specific information can be found on page 4.

MEALS

Meals and snacks can be arranged for groups of 35 or more at a reasonable cost. There is a meal minimum depending on length of stay. Our camp cooks are certified food handlers. See page 3 for meal plan and costs. When the camp provides food service, the group is responsible for setting and clearing tables, washing dishes and pots, disposing of trash, and sweeping the dining lodge floor. All meals are served family style.

MEDICAL INFORMATION

The camp does not provide health or medical services during the school year. Suffolk Central Hospital, at the intersection of Roanoke Avenue and Route 58 in Riverhead, is a few miles from the camp. The camp requires that user groups have at least one member who is an emergency medical professional on site during the entire stay. The camp recommends a LPN, RN or EMT. All users of camp facilities must have medical insurance to use any of the camp facilities. Each user group must provide group accident/medical insurance or use each individual participant’s accident/medical insurance as primary coverage. Medical permission forms are required for each individual under 18 years of age.

SUPERVISION OF MINORS

All children under the age of 18 must be supervised by adult chaperones. The camp requires one adult for every 10 children 8 years and older. For children under 8 years, one adult for 6 children is required. Chaperones are expected to be in attendance and actively supervising minors at all times.

USER GROUP RESPONSIBILITY

Each user group is responsible for the conduct of its members. All user groups are responsible for any damage to camp property that occurs while they are using the camp facilities. User groups may not move any camp equipment from its original location. User groups must comply with room and building maximum occupancy. User groups must collect and dispose of all trash properly. Failure to leave the assigned camp areas and buildings clean and neat may result in a $100 cleaning charge. Any damage incurred on camp property will be prorated and charged to user group. Group can not return until all fees are paid.

RESTRICTIONS

School-year use of camp is limited to those not-for-profit groups or organizations that provide educational programs or activities. The camp facilities cannot be rented or used for strictly social or pleasure activities, including but not limited to get-togethers, retreats, reunions, parties, dances, family events or weddings. User groups are expected to provide proof of their non-profit status and educational purpose or mission.

OUTDOOR PROGRAMS

The camp offers the following educational programs for day and overnight user groups of all ages, except where noted. These programs can be scheduled whether or not user groups are using other camp facilities. These programs are not available to individuals or families unless they are part of an organized group.

FARM EDUCATION

During a walking tour of our 40-acre farm, you will learn how the farm raises and cares for cows, pigs, sheep, goats, chickens and pheasants. Tour the orchards and garden areas and learn about planting, tending and harvesting crops for animal and human consumption. Learn about the importance of agriculture to the local economy. Farm education programs are approximately 1 hour long and are available every day from 9 am to 4 pm.

ADVENTURE EDUCATION

The Adventure Education program consists of a series of cooperative games, challenge initiatives and low ropes or high ropes activities that help your group members develop trust, teamwork, leadership and problem- solving skills. A challenge by choice philosophy is emphasized. Adventure education programs are limited to youth in grades 4 through adults. Programs can be structured to meet the educational goals of your groups.

OUTDOOR/ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION

The natural environment of camp is a unique combination of mixed woodlands, sand dunes, farmland and beachfront, providing diverse habitats for a variety of wildlife. The Nature Center is located in the middle of this rich woodland environment and seasonably houses aquariums, touch tanks, small wild animals and nature exhibits. Participants may search for turtles, salamanders or snakes; explore fresh and saltwater environments; identify birds, wildlife, trees and aquatic insects and examine local marine animals through sensory awareness activities.

TERMS MEALS NOTE

Catered meal rates will be charged if a cook is not available or selected by choice. Non-refundable minimum deposit of $300 or 30% of total fees (whichever is higher) is due with the application. Once your reservation has been confirmed, this deposit is nonrefundable. User groups must also return the signed agreement and a Certificate of Insurance to guarantee their reserved dates.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ORIENTATION

Upon arrival at camp, each user group will be greeted by a camp designee who will show the user group the areas and facilities it is permitted to use. A representative from the user group will inspect the facilities with the camp designee, then sign the 4-H Camp Use Report that describes the conditions of the facilities and equipment. This report will be used to determine any damages that may occur during the user group’s stay. If there are any changes in the condition of facilities and/or equipment, the group will be billed for these damages according to a list of replacement costs presented during the orientation. The staff designee will also review with user group leader all camp policies that apply. It is expected that user group leader understand and review all camp policies with the group.

CERTIFICATE OF INSURANCE

The user group shall provide a Certificate of Insurance prior to the scheduled stay at camp showing evidence of the following minimum limits of insurance or as required by law, whichever is greater.

  1. Comprehensive General Liability including contractual, with a minimum combined single limit per occurrence of $1,000,000. If the general liability is from a policy of insurance commonly known as Business Owners Policy (BOP), the Certificate must indicate that the liability insurance provided under the BOP is the primary for this event. NO EXCEPTIONS.
  2. If the user group is a business, or has employees, the Certificate of Insurance must include proof of Worker’s Compensation.
  3. The user group must name Cornell Cooperative Extension of Nassau County, the Dorothy P. Flint Nassau County 4-H Camp and the County of Nassau as additionally insured.

HOLD HARMLESS

The user group shall defend, indemnify and hold harmless Cornell Cooperative Extension, the Dorothy P. Flint Nassau County 4-H Camp, the County of Nassau and their employees, officers, volunteers and directors from any and all claims, actions, demands, or other proceedings for any actual or alleged injury to persons or damage to property arising out of any act or omission of the user group, its employees, guests or invitees during its occupancy of the camp premises.

DIRECTIONS TO CAMP

Take the LIE to Exit 71 (Hampton Bays/Calverton). Turn left at bottom of exit ramp, cross the railroad tracks through light at Route 25 and continue north until you reach traffic light at Sound Avenue (approximately 3.9 miles from LIE to Sound Avenue). At traffic light turn right and continue east for 2.5 miles until you see the 4-H Camp sign at the West Entrace on the left side of the road. Turn left at the sign. Continue to drive into camp and park in the designated visitor parking.

4-H is the youth development program of Cornell Cooperative Extension. The 4-H emblem is a four-leaf clover with the letter “H” in each leaf. The letters stand for Head, Heart, Hands and Health. SUMMER CAMP

Cornell Cooperative Extension operates a resident summer camp for youth entering grades 4-10. Summer camp offers many opportunities to make friends, learn new skills and gain independence. A summer camp brochure is available January--July. Call (516) 433-7970 ext 6.

DESCRIPTION OF CAMP FACILITIES SLEEPING FACILITIES

Cliff House

  • $450 per day (heated September-November and April-May).
  • 8 rooms with a central meeting area / fireplace.
  • 2 full bathrooms with showers / 1 half bathroom.
  • Food/dishes can be brought in for meals; small kitchen with oven. Each room has 4 beds (2 sets of bunk beds); 2 corridors each with 4 bedrooms. A central meeting area divides the 2 areas. Sleeps a maximum of 32. Overlooks L.I. Sound on east side of camp.

Staff House

  • $350 per day (heated September-November and April-May).
  • 6 rooms with a small central meeting area.
  • 2 full bathrooms with showers.
  • No cooking facilities. Each room has 4 beds (2 sets of bunk beds); 2 corridors branch out from central meeting area. Sleeps a maximum of 24.

Cabin

  • $55 per day, per cabin. Wood cabins with screened windows (can be covered at night).
  • 14 cabins that can be used and share a common bathroom facility nearby.
  • Bunk beds sleep 10-12.
  • Electricity. “Super Cabins”
  • $100 per day, per cabin. Large wood cabins with screened windows.
  • 2 “super cabins” share a common bathroom facility nearby.
  • Bunk beds sleep 20 maximum.
  • Electricity.

OTHER CAMP AREA USE

Tenting area

  • $10 per person, per day.
  • Groups can bring their own tenting equipment and will be directed to areas within walking distance of the common bathroom facility.
  • Cooking on site. Grills and picnic tables available. Day use of camp

  • Groups can make arrangements to use designated areas (recreational fields, trails, beachfront).
  • Bathroom facilities will be designated.
